Blogging has its benefits

If you asked me if there's been any change in the past year, I wouldn't really immediately say yes. But the unexpected benefit of recording all of this suffering is that, by looking back at past posts, I am reminded how much worse the pain used to be than it is now.

This can work for you, too.

Progress in nerve healing is so slow it's virtually unrecognizable; it sure doesn't feel like I'm getting better. But every time I read something from a year or two ago, I realize that, although I still have pain, it used to be worse.

Yes my tongue still burns, but not nearly like did. I can't promise you will recover 100% (I haven't)... but comparatively speaking, things are worlds better, and that is comforting because it means there's still room for improvement!

Looking in the rear view mirror can suddenly bring things into view. When the pain is  overwhelming, and you feel lost and hopeless, write it down. Nobody understands this pain and it is invisible to others, so you get no sympathy; some people even hint that you're making it all up.

Keep sharing your thoughts with others here on the blog: even if all you do is post and then kind of forget about it, when you look back at it months and years from now, you'll be able to measure subtle improvement.

Get involved, and get better soon. :)

    1. Take vitamin B, the expensive Methyl kind...that is suppose to help nerves heal faster. In the meantime, avoid sugar and caffeine which can add to the burning, suck on lozenges and water, and try numbing medication such as lidocaine.

    2. Hi Jane,

You are very right. I was injured in 2010 and the pain, though still present, is much better than it was five years ago.

So to those who are suffering now, do not lose hope! You WILL improve, albeit very, very, very slowly. But you definitely will.

  2. Hi Jane . I have lingual nerve injury since May 2015. Since then my life is been limited to the pain and the uncomfortable sensations in the right of my tongue. I feel very hopeless and the every day pain is killing me I take gabapentin 3x day 600mg per dose and it does not take the pain away. I cry almost every day because my life has really change I feel like a disable person because this pain don't let me do anything. I have two little kids and I am feel sorry with them because I can't play , go to places or read a book with them . I don't know what to do ,my life has really changed a lot. I see myself in the mirror and looks like is no me no more.My mother is the one who is suffering this tragedy with me .In her face and can see all my pain and I feel so sorry for my poor mother who is suffering with me .About my kids they only want to see their mother cure and healthy like before they always ask me if my mouth doesn't hurt no more so I can play with them ,I look at them and I can see the sadness in their eyes. I am really devasted ,I just pray to God for all this nigthmare to be over and I will start praying too for every person who has this can of problem too. I just wanted to share this with you because other people do not understand this kind of pain and burning. I really wish that you keep getting better Jane and thanks for your blog.

  3. I just had a very small SURFACE filling (which I really didn't think I needed injections for myself, but the dentist insisted I did) and believe I have nerve damage. It has only been a week but I have been in tears each and every day and can barely eat. I yawned this morning and my jaw was in a closed lock position for nearly an hour (yes, I have a severe case of TMJ which makes this pretty much unbearable). As soon as she did the shot I asked her what happened as it was an immediate pain. My ear felt like it filled with water and my throat felt like it was scraped all the way down that same side. I have a migraine (NEVER get headaches) and I have an extremely sore lump under my chin (right above where u check for a pulse). I REALLY hope this goes away soon and what sucks is an oral surgeon was supposed to pull the previously root canalled tooth right next to the one she filled next week. Guess that will not happen. My thoughts go out to all those suffering.

  6. Hello, just wanted to share my experience with facial nerve pain. My problem started a year ago when i caught the slapped cheek disease aka parvovirus B19. I believe there are many people who get facial nerve pain from infections. I have never got any help from my doctor who only sent me to do an CT scan of my head and when that looked fine he recommended physiotherapy.

Anyway, i wanted to share some stuff that makes my pain better (for a while) and the first is facial massage and the second is heat. The massage helps and i always notise the day after that the pain is much better. Maybe it is because my muscles needs help to relax from the pain. And the heat i apply with an odinary heat water bottle on the side of the jaw/cheek on each side. Make sure you have something in between the bottle and the skin, like a cloth, so the skin won't get burned from the hot bottle.

This has made my pain about 70% better!

  7. Sheri.....I had a tooth extracted & was on Amoxicillan & a week later I had what I thought was thrush. Was given Nystatin & I thought it was getn better but 4 days later was put on Penicillan then 2 days later changed to Augmentin & Peridex Oral Rinse. My mouth was burning so bad I stopped the Peridex 7 days later. Mouth was still burning so I stopped Augmentin after 12 days. I've been off Augmentin for a week & off Peridex for 2 weeks & I still have burning & pain. some days it's tolerable then the next it's not. I am not sure if this is from the needle from the dentist as the symptoms weren't immediate or is this from the meds. I don't think this will ever go away & it's cause anxiety depression sleepless nights. I don't know what to do. I've seen several Dr's & they say it'll go away in time. well how long! it's been 6 weeks since the extraction. not sure what caused this and if it's meds can they cause permanent burning mouth or dry mouth. I want my life back.
