Hi Jane - It sounds as if you have been through hell, and I sympathize with the pain you have experienced. In my case, the lingual nerve on my right side was injured during wisdom tooth removal in October 2008, although the resulting dysesthesia is not as painful as the pain you have experienced. I have also tried the same regimen of drugs that you have tried, and also experienced similar side effects to yours.
ReplyDeleteI have one caveat: Vitamin B6 and B12 were recommended to me by an acupuncturist, and seconded by an oral surgeon. I took approximately 100 mg/day. It made the tingling pain much worse, going from approximately 3/10 to 8/10 (but still not as bad as you have experienced). It took me some time to realize that it was the Vit B complex that was making the pain worse. At the time I was under the care of Dr. Steven Graff-Radford, the Director of the Headache and Orofacial Pain Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He quizzed other patients who were taking Vit B supplements and none experienced aggravated pain, so maybe my reaction was unusual, but your readers should be aware of this possibility.
Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. There are remedies that you have tried (such as herbs) that I was not aware of, and I'll give these a try.
Tony - that's interesting about the B vitamins. They are supposed to help resolve nerve pain, not make it worse, but now that you mention it... I stopped taking the B's about 2 months ago, (new facial pain doc put me on soft diet, don't suck lozenges, chew gum or gummy vitamins, no salad, etc...) And, I must say, I do feel slight reduction in burning. Today is a bad day though - tired and stress - so burning tongue and pain in cheek are up to about an 8 but it's been around 5 lately.
ReplyDeleteHow are you feeling? Has anything new worked for you or made things worse?
